Hotlinking means your website displays images that are stored on someone else’s server. That makes you dependent on them, can slow down your page and passes visitor data to third parties. Replace External Images replaces these hotlinks with images from your own Media Library.
Why hotlinks are a risk
- Outages: If the other server deletes or moves an image, it disappears from your site.
- Privacy: When an external image loads, the other server learns your visitors’ IP addresses. In Germany, this has been viewed more critically since the Munich Regional Court’s Google Fonts ruling (2022).
- Load time: Every additional server requires its own connection. And images you don’t host yourself can’t be compressed or converted to modern formats.
- Blocking: Many servers eventually start actively blocking hotlinks. Then a placeholder appears instead of the image, or nothing at all.
Find and replace hotlinks
- Install the plugin. In the admin area, go to Plugins → Add New Plugin, search for “Replace External Images”, then install and activate it.
- Select your posts. Under Posts or Pages, select all affected entries and choose the bulk action “Replace External Images”.
- Check the log. The import dialog shows every image. Skipped images are listed with the reason, so you can replace them manually where needed.
Respect image rights: Only import images you have the rights to use. The plugin doesn’t change who owns the rights; it just makes sure the file is stored on your site.
Frequently asked questions
How can I tell whether my site contains hotlinks?
Start the bulk import for all posts. The very first step counts all external images. With Pro Unlimited, wp replexim scan lists all affected entries without changing anything.
What about embedded videos or social media posts?
The plugin only handles images (<img>). Embedded videos, tweets or maps stay as they are.

All external images into your Media Library at once
Replace External Images does it in one run, with a progress bar and a log. Free for posts and pages.
