Checklist: Migrating your images correctly after a WordPress move

From the backup to checking your featured images: the key steps to make sure no image gets lost in a migration.

When you move to WordPress, whether from Wix, Blogger, an old domain or another CMS, images are what gets lost most often. This checklist helps you keep track of everything.

Before the migration

  • Don’t cancel the old system. As long as the images are reachable there, they can be imported.
  • Back up the old system, including the image files if possible.
  • Take stock: How many posts, pages and products are there? That way you’ll know later whether anything is missing.

Right after importing your content

  • Spot-check: Open five to ten posts and check the image addresses. Do they still point to the old system?
  • Back up the new WordPress site before making any major changes.
  • Import external images in one pass: Select all posts and pages and import them with Replace External Images.

After the image import

  • Check the log: The “Problems only” filter shows you every image that couldn’t be imported, along with the reason.
  • Replace missing images: Download and upload blocked images manually once.
  • Check featured images: Many systems don’t have featured images. The plugin automatically sets the first imported image, but check that it fits.
  • Optimize your Media Library: Now that the images are stored on your site, you can compress them or convert them to WebP.

Finally

  • Check links and redirects: Old post URLs should point to the new ones via 301 redirects.
  • Search again: Run a second import pass. Images that were already imported are reused, so you only see what’s really missing.
  • Only now cancel the old system.

Safety net: With Replace External Images Pro, every import is listed in the history and can be undone with a single click. That doesn’t replace a backup, but it helps if something isn’t right.

Conclusion

The most important rule: secure your images first, then shut down the old system. With a bulk import and a quick check afterwards, it’s done in an hour, even on large websites.
