After moving from Wix, Blogger, Squarespace or Medium to WordPress, your text is there, but the images are often still on the old platform. Replace External Images brings these images into your WordPress Media Library in a single pass and replaces the addresses in your content, even across hundreds of posts.
Why images stay external after a migration
Most import tools bring over text, titles and categories, but not the image files. Your content still contains addresses like static.wixstatic.com, blogger.googleusercontent.com, images.squarespace-cdn.com or miro.medium.com. As long as the old account exists, everything looks normal. But this has consequences:
- Dependency: If you cancel the old account or the platform changes its addresses, the images are gone.
- Load time: Every image comes from a third-party server you can’t optimize.
- Privacy: When external images load, your visitors’ IP addresses are sent to the third-party server.
- No control: You can’t crop, compress or convert images to WebP if they’re outside your Media Library.
Your own Media Library in three steps
- Install the plugin. In the admin area, go to Plugins → Add New Plugin, search for “Replace External Images”, then install and activate it.
- Select your posts. Under Posts or Pages, select all affected entries and choose the bulk action “Replace External Images”. Use Screen Options to show up to 999 entries per page.
- Check the log. The import dialog shows every image. Skipped images are listed with the reason, so you can replace them manually where needed.
Notes by platform
- Wix: Image addresses often include size parameters such as
/v1/fill/w_740. The plugin downloads exactly that version, i.e. the size that was shown on the old site. - Blogger: Blogger images are usually publicly accessible and can be imported reliably. Check your featured images afterwards, since Blogger doesn’t have them.
- Squarespace: Import before you cancel your Squarespace subscription. After cancellation, the images are usually no longer reachable.
- Medium: Medium exports contain image addresses on
miro.medium.com, which can usually be imported without any trouble.
Important: Don’t cancel the old account until the import is complete and you’ve checked the skipped images. Create a backup before you start.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to import 500 posts?
That depends on the number and size of the images. As a rough guide: one to three seconds per image. The import dialog shows you the progress at all times.
What happens to images that appear more than once?
If the same image is used in several posts, it’s imported only once and replaced with the same file everywhere.
Can I undo the import?
With Pro, yes: in the Import history, you can roll back any import with a single click. Content and featured images are restored, and imported images are removed.
